This non-foaming and non-stripping facial cleanser is ideal to soothe red, irritated, or inflamed skin.

This Cleanser is feather light with an instant cooling effect on inflamed, acneic skin. It is also ideal for sun damaged skin or reactive skin in need of soothing support, while still encouraging detox and decongesting. It combines multiple Chamomile varieties, Calendula, Licorice, Lavender, and raw Honey all for calming in order to promote optimal skin health. Inflammation should always be the first symptom addressed in any situation where the skin is in a state of stress. The light oils of Sunflower and Safflower are our favorites for dissolving blackheads and oxidized sebum in pores. This multitasker does all of the above, while hydrating and keeping our lipid barrier intact and healthy.

How to Use

Moisten hands and face with water. Pump a dime size (3-6 pumps) into fingertips. Massage well over the skin, especially in congested areas or around eyes for makeup removal. Remove with a warm towel. Using a warm towel to remove cleanser will easily remove make-up and sunscreen; cleanse twice for heavy make-up. For initial use: SHAKE WELL. This facial cleanser may need to be shaken occasionally to strengthen natural emulsion.

Store this product in a cool, dry and dark place. Use within 6 months of opening and use within 1 year from the manufacture date, which is noted on the bottom of the bottle.

German + Roman Chamomile – Organically farmed and harvested exclusively for Laurel in the Pacific Northwest, both variations of Chamomile are cooling and soothing to irritated and problem skin.

Grapefruit and Blood Orange – Non-photosensitizing Citrus oils are ideal for balancing the skin’s natural oil production, and make for a refreshing cleanse. These oils are distilled fresh for Laurel by an artisan distiller in California.

Calendula – Calendula two ways; in Hydrosol form as well as a whole plant extraction. Calendula is ideal for cleansing by encouraging cellular turnover, regeneration and improving anti-inflammatory pathways.

Safflower and Sunflower – Our two favorite raw and freshly pressed seed oils for cleansing are in perfect balance here to decongest pores and minimize their appearance by attaching to our own oxidized oils so they can be easily wiped away.

Honey – Our small batch, raw California honey has naturally occurring enzymes that help with gentle and healthy cell turnover.

Burdock, Dandelion, Licorice, Echinacea – Our in-house Root decoction is purifying, cleansing, brightening and stimulating for surface immunity. These are all prebiotics for a diverse microbiome.

Apple Cider Vinegar – Contains malic and lactic acids that help soften and exfoliate the skin. It is powerful, and we only use it in a very small quantity, keeping this very gentle and suitable for all skin types.

French Pink Clay – Pink Clay is the gentlest of clays and doesn’t dry out the skin. It improves circulation and promotes the release of deep pore congestion.

Product Details

Its name comes from its ability to support all skin functions by lifting the burden of inflammation, the root cause of all secondary skin symptoms. Secondary skin symptoms include, but are not limited to acne, rosacea, redness, broken capillaries, excessive dryness, loss of elasticity, and even hyperpigmentation. It contains plants which have a lymph affinity; encouraging ease, flow, and release of the stagnation that shows up in our Qi, lymph, fascia, and connective tissue. The Unburden Serum encourages and supports all cellular functioning to continue with ease and grace, transforming skin to a state of tranquility.

The ratio of lipid oils in this particular Serum is quite different from our other Serums, making this one of our richer and more moisturizing Serums. The oils in the Unburden Serum are all centered around their anti-inflammatory ability. Soothing and calming, while still raw and unrefined, Evening Primrose, Jojoba and Tamanu are blended together to be gentle enough for any arising skin concern. Chia and Pomegranate are added to give this moisturizer more viscosity. These more “cushiony” oils soften and slow the delivery of some of our more potent healing botanical infusions. Plants like Baical Skullcap, Licorice Root and Helichrysum provide powerful plant medicine, addressing more chronic instances of long-term inflammation and irritation. Like almost all Laurel Skin products, essential oils are microdosed in the Unburden Serum, revered as healing tools, rather than using them for scent. At the lowest percentage found in any of our products, the oils in this Serum are well-received and helpful to even the most reactive of skin types. Evening Primrose – Freshly pressed and produced exclusively for our line, this California-made raw, unrefined oil reduces inflammation with its vast essential fatty acid profile, while it aids in reducing the appearance of fine lines and scarring.

German Chamomile – This azulene-rich plant is a cooling relief to red or irritated skin of any kind. It is a potent anti-inflammatory that provides soothing, gentle regeneration. This plant often gets confused with Blue Tansy, sometimes referred to as Moroccan Chamomile, but German Chamomile is actually much gentler and soothing to the skin and poses less opportunity for reactivity.

Baical Skullcap – As lovers of herbal medicine, this is by far the most potent anti-inflammatory that we have found. It has a strong antihistamine-like effect and supports the skin to work through reactivity with ease. This vibrant yellow root is also specific to allergic reactions and supports skin that often flares up in response to food and environments.

Helichrysum – Freshly distilled for us in the Pacific Northwest, this little yellow flower is as gentle as it is potent. It strengthens tissues and supports healthy cellular activity, and reduces the appearance of scars and broken capillaries. This plant is a true healer, and a powerful anti-inflammatory.

Lemon Balm – This nutrient-rich green leaf, also known as Melissa, is high in delicate antioxidants that work swiftly to reduce free radical damage. It is specific to mending and soothing inflamed and problematic skin, and it also has a lymph and immune system affinity that has a regulatory effect. Our Sun Serum is ideally applied both before and after time spent in the sun, as it features whole plant extracts that address both prevention and repair through the use of antioxidant-dense and anti-inflammatory botanicals. Whole plants rich in carotenoids, resveratrol, flavonoids, polyphenols, and essential fatty acids are blended mindfully to help prevent UV damage. It thrives and relishes in the sunshine as a common weed, and has been used historically to reverse sun damage for centuries. By stimulating circulation and bringing new life to cells, rough sun damaged skin is repaired. Simultaneously, Scarlet strengthens our ability to flourish healthily in the full glory of the sun.

Carrot Seed – This antioxidant-rich, aromatic oil helps to firm and soften the skin, repairing chronic UV damage related symptoms such as uneven skin tone and loss of elasticity. Ours is seeded, harvested, and distilled just for us by a farm in the beautiful Pacific Northwest.

Licorice – This organically cultivated root is a powerful anti-inflammatory, containing phytoconstituents that provide immediate relief, improving all skin functions. Licorice has been studied extensively for its ability to balance and slow melanin production, making it a brightening ally for hyperpigmentation and scarring.

Sea Buckthorn – This concentrated superfood extract is made of the whole fruit and seed, which makes it a wealth of its entire range of essential fatty acids, vitamin C, flavonoids and carotenoids. Its whole plant synergy works together to strengthen connective tissue and prevent its breakdown.

Marshmallow – This gentle root is an ideal skin softener for those who have spent years basking in the sun’s glow. Grown just miles from our Petaluma apothecary-lab, Marshmallow is a soothing anti-inflammatory to address redness and irritation of any kind.

Red Raspberry Seed Oil – Our organic, unrefined Red Raspberry Seed oil is custom-pressed for us and contains nutrients making it specific for both pre- and post-sun care. It’s a beautiful, soft, antioxidant-rich oil that offers a wide variety of essential fatty acids. It contains both carotenoids and flavonoids, such as Rutin. Both the whole oil itself and its individual constituents have been closely studied for their ability to prevent UV induced skin damage.

Red Grape Seed Oil – When we are seeking Resveratrol, not just any grape seed oil will do. It has to be raw, unrefined, and made with red grapes in order to help protect and repair our skin from UV damage. This is incredibly rare in the world of skin care. It is deep greenish blue in color, and it smells just like grapes. When examining our ingredients, Red Grape falls pretty far down on the list, and that is strictly due to its potency. If you are using products with Grape as a primary ingredient, and the product doesn’t smell like grapes, then that can be an obvious cue that it has been refined and the necessary antioxidants that promote UV defense and repair are no longer present.

How to Use

Moisten face and hands. Apply 1 teaspoon or less of Honey Berry Mask to fingertips, then glide and massage over damp clean skin. Leave for 10-30 minutes, then rinse.

If your Honey Berry Mask has solidified or contains what looks like grains of sugar, that is normal raw honey crystallization. Crystalized honey is not intended to be used as a manual scrub, which would be harsh on facial skin. Take a scoop of 1 tsp or less and warm it in your fingers until it softens, then gently pat onto dry skin, in a style often referred to as “honey tapping“. Once applied evenly, add water and use normally. You can also place your entire enclosed jar of Honey Berry Mask in a hot water bath which will soften and liquify the honey.

Honey – Our raw, organically farmed California honey is fresh and vibrant, delivered directly by our partnering farms. Honey is an ideal choice to balance the microbiome: with the ability and intelligence to halt the overgrowth of harmful bacteria colonies while still leaving allowance for a diverse beneficial microbiome to exist. It has gentle enzymatic action that works to turn over cells in a non-forceful way. As if that wasn’t enough, Honey is hydrating, and visibly plumps and firms the skin.

Raspberries – Organic raspberries have dense vitamin C and bioflavonoid content. They are high in enzymes and gentle acids which help to exfoliate and brighten skin tone, acne scars, and hyperpigmentation of all kinds.

Grapefruit + Sweet Orange – Both Grapefruit and Sweet Orange essential oils are specific for balancing the skin as well as lifting the spirit. Both of these oils are hydro-distilled just for us; which means there is no concern for phototoxicity, since those furocoumarins in question are not even present in hydro-distillations.

This multi-functional balm reduces the appearance of redness, swelling, and irritation while offering up a therapeutic dose of whole plant goodness to jump-start and support the skin’s own healing process. In addition to being a family and household staple, this Balm is also a beloved facial moisturizer for inflamed, reactive skin or for those with considerable health concerns or sensitivities.

Tamanu Oil is the foundation and star of this formula. This vibrant green oil is what gives our Recovery Balm its color, along with its ability to correct microbial imbalances, reduce inflammation and create an overall environment for healing. Like most of our Laurel Skin formulas, this Balm contains a 3-month whole plant infusion. Calendula, Comfrey and Yarrow are all skin-healing herbs that support new cell growth and regeneration. The microdosed essential oils in Recovery Balm are Lavender, Helichrysum and Lemon Balm; each with a unique relationship to microbiome and skin, included to balance and repair.

If your Balm melts in transit, it could have textural changes that make it less smooth. While this does not affect product performance, a smooth Balm texture is often more desirable. If you would like to restore your Balm’s texture, follow the instructions in this video. Do not leave your Balm in a hot location like your car or near a sunny window.

Pomegranate – One of the most beautiful oils that we work with, Pomegranate Seed Oil is rich and moisturizing. It is healing and balancing to skin barriers that have been damaged over time by inflammation.

Calendula – Our vibrant biodynamic Calendula is farmed and harvested just a few miles from our Laurel Skin apothecary-lab. Calendula is deeply restorative and healing to the skin, helpful for scarring and all forms of skin damage.

Lavender – Our custom-distilled, California-grown, biodynamic Lavender essential oil is anti-inflammatory, calming, and cooling to the skin. It soothes the nervous system, which is often compromised alongside inflammatory skin conditions. Lavender promotes a healthy microbiome and prevents pathogenic bacteria from overpopulating the skin.

Potent, raw, unrefined botanicals are selected to regenerate the skin, supporting all aspects of radiant skin health. Its carotenoid-rich profile is specific to brightening and evening skin tone, alongside polyphenols for strengthening and building connective tissue for firm and supple skin. Dense nutrients and antioxidants found in our whole plants provide every necessary building block for overnight skin repair, either from long term damage or from daily free radical activity. Night Balm is best suited for normal, dry, or mature skin with an emphasis on aging vibrantly.

Rosehips and Roses are the center of the Night Balm formula. The combination of these two ingredients (actually parts of the same plant) are what make the Night Balm excel at skin damage repair and connective tissue strengthening. Rosehips are ideal for scarring and hyperpigmentation. The fruit and seed contain high amounts of Vitamin C, E and A – more specifically, trace amounts of trans-retinoid acid*, as well as high amounts of precursor carotenoids. Roses restore a damaged lipid barrier, as well as firm connective tissue. Their petals contain waxy lipids that are similar to our skins own ceramides. Pomegranate is a notable powerhouse in this formula too, instantly plumping and moisturizing with its long-chain lipids which envelope each cell in soothing support. 

The Night Balm is slightly richer than our lighter Day Balm. The Night Balm’s lipids are more reparative, while the Day Balm’s are more protective. The Night Balm’s scent is of rose and spice, and the Day Balm is of light citrus blossom.

*This is not like using a retinol, because this vitamin A is still balanced and within the context of its ‘whole plant’ make up, making any retinol related concerns a non-issue.

This is a hydrating mist/serum combination, made of artisan distilled single farm hydrosols, along with a combination of herbalist-made and housemade whole plant extracts. The plants chosen for this Elixir bring an abundance of polysaccharides, B vitamins, enzymes, bioflavonoids, polyphenols, resveratrol, vitamin C, and plant humectants that mimic hyaluronic acid; all phytonutrients within their whole plant synergy. This focused blend of whole plant lipids comes together to mirror and support our skin’s own natural lipid barrier. This nourishing oil is soothing and supportive to all skin types, even the most sensitive.

Sensitivities and allergies to certain plants can steer some people away from using whole plant products. One objective with Essential Lipids is to make whole plants more accessible to those individuals with allergies and sensitivities. It is nut oil free, rosehip oil free, and essential oil free. It is also vegan and gluten free. We are glad to be offering this Laurel Skin two-in-one product for those sensitive and/or allergy-prone folks who have always wanted to use our line, but haven’t been able to due to ingredient allergies.

Essential Lipids is also highly recommended for those with a damaged lipid barrier, skin in healing crisis, and for those with autoimmune conditions or in treatment for serious illness.  This product is also well suited to someone transitioning to the Laurel line for the first time from a more conventional or clinical line.

How to Use

To use as a cleanser: dispense 3-4 pumps onto fingertips and apply to dry skin. Massage well around congested areas and makeup. Apply a warm towel to skin and gently wipe away dirt, makeup, and excess oil. To use as a moisturizer: Apply 1 pump to fingertips and press gently into clean damp skin.

Jojoba – Jojoba is chemically a wax, as opposed to an oil. Jojoba is nature’s own ceramides, a waxy lipid that is found in our skin sebum and essential to a healthy lipid barrier. ‘Ceramide’ means unit of measurement of wax and waxes are found throughout many whole plants. Jojoba is known for resembling our skin’s natural wax barrier more than any other plant; and unrefined raw Jojoba has the ability to restore a damaged skin barrier on its own.

Calendula – Calendula is a plant that is a true necessity for healthy skin. It is deeply restorative and healing on a cellular level, with an abundance of carotenoids and resins that our skin can use with ease. It is excellent for aiding the healing of skin damage. Cholesterol is another lipid found in our skin’s protective barrier, and Calendula mirrors that with its high phytosterol content. The Delicate Barrier process begins with seeding Calendula flowers at our partnering farms, and eventually leads to a 3-month infusion process. To ensure we are capturing the full range of phytosterols and the other beneficial constituents Calendula offers, we combine our proprietary maceration process with a Calendula whole-plant pressurized concentrate.

Pomegranate Oil – This is quite possibly the most beautiful oil that we work with. It is rich and thick by nature, but penetrates deeply and is incredibly healing to skin barriers that have been damaged over time by inflammation.

Evening Primrose Seed Oil – This California-made oil is freshly pressed and produced exclusively for our line. It reduces inflammation with its vast essential fatty acid profile, while also aiding in reducing the appearance of fine lines and scarring.

How to Use

Moisten face and hands with water. Pump a dime size amount (3-6 pumps) into fingertips. Massage well onto skin, especially around congested areas or around eyes for makeup removal. Chamomile – Our German Chamomile Hydrosol, grown and distilled in the Pacific Northwest, is the ultimate cooler, soother, and reliever for reactive, red, or inflamed skin. It is as powerful and strong as it is calming, and beneficial to everyone. Our Elixir contains FIVE variations of the Chamomile plant, to ensure we provide all the phytonutrients it has to offer: the hydrosol, two types of herbalist-made whole plant macerations, alongside both Roman and German micro-dosed essential oils.

Lavender – Our Biodynamic Lavender Hydrosol is a rare treasure, grown and distilled just miles from our Petaluma Barn. It is calming and cooling to the skin, but most of all balancing to oil production, pH, and our microbiome. This is a plant that can truly help with both chronic acne and mild breakouts.

Turmeric – Our whole plant organic Turmeric extract is deeply anti-inflammatory to reactive skin and acneic skin. It is brightening, and contains an abundance of flavonoids and polyphenols for antioxidant activity.

Meadowsweet – Pore clarifying Meadowsweet is a soothing and balancing plant. It is cleansing and purifying, while at the same time calms and reduces irritation in the skin. Meadowsweet is also a source of salicylic acid while simultaneously offering anti-inflammatory and mucilagenous compounds, making the sometimes negative effects of isolated salicylic nonexistent.

Lemon Balm – This unique hydrosol and essential oil is rare and delicate. Its high antioxidant content is specific to cellular renewal and repair. It also has a lymph affinity, inspiring movement and flow over stagnation. It can have a balancing effect on our surface immunity and microbiome.

Helichrysum – Pacific Northwest grown and artisan distilled, our Helichrysum Hydrosol is no doubt a powerful plant medicine. Cooling and soothing Helichrysum is deeply regenerative to the skin by restoring health and vitality on a cellular level.

How to Use

Shake Elixir well with each use and mist directly and generously onto clean skin. Follow with a Serum and/or Balm.

Store this product in a cool, dry and dark place. Use within 6 months of opening and by the recommended use-by date, which can be found on the bottom of the bottle.
