Your next chapter: 2019

“Hope smiles from the threshold of the year to come, whispering it will be happier.” Wonderful words, written some time ago by Alfred Lord Tennyson. But they could have been written today by my new favorite author, Michell Obama. I just finished reading a Christmas gift from my daughter, her memoir, Becoming. If you’ve not read you should. It will lift you up + inspire you!

Her story is a great one. I love that it’s not over yet. Like each of us, she is still becoming . Stay tuned! More to come! The next chapter of life awaits us all.

At her core, Michelle Obama is an optimist. At the start of a New Year optimism always feels more plentiful. The trick is to carry a deep well of it within our hearts, always. It will sustain us. Throughout her life, Michelle Obama seems to have done just that. Despite how life has unfolded over the past couple of years, she continues to be optimistic about the future; for herself, for her family + for all of us.

I always feel as if the New Year ahead is like having big blank book, 365 pages long. in my hands. In it I get to write the next chapter of life. It will be filled with things that lie ahead that have never been before. Things I’ve not yet imagined. Gratefully, it is yet another chance to get it right!

I don’t make ambitious lists of New Year Resolutions. By now I pretty much know the virtues I am likely to embrace + the vices I am unlikely to shed. And I like to avoid those mid-February self-recriminations :)

Instead, I like to create a little space for the New Year to unfold, so I can imagine what it might look like. I start in my closet.

A la Marie Kondo, every last item comes out, I give it a good, deep clean + nothing goes back in unless it has earned it’s spot. It’s a fresh, easy start that gets me ready to cheer the New Year, begin the next chapter of my story + let go of things that no longer serve me. And I don’t mean just old shoes!

We have lots of new things in store for 2019 at Supple + we’ll be sure to keep you in the loop. But for now, we just wanted to wish you every good thing as you make room for your next chapter + start your own story of 2019. Make it a good one!

“For last year’s words belong to last year’s language + next year’s words await another voice.”

T.S. Eliot
